ATA’s Annual Debate Competition

As the 2013-2014 Student Council held its annual debate competition just two weeks ago, any reassurance needed for the potential and power of our youth was provided. With four teams, each consisting of four debaters, going head to head in two sets of intense debates, the predictions of the results were extremely difficult.  With that, we'd like to thank all of our judges: Sr.Amani, Sr.Kamilah, Sr.Sumaiya, and Br.Jabril for all of their hard work. In an effort to help those ATA students who will be participating in the MIST (Muslim Interscholastic Tournament) debate competition this year, the council decided to use a few of the topics that MIST provided. From these six, the two up for the preliminary debates were: "An oppressive government is more desirable than no government at all", AND "Parents/legal guardians of a minor should be held legally responsible for their child's bullying, if it results in the serious injury or death of another minor."

For the first time in ATA history, we had TWO eighth graders on a debate team, Alhamdulillah. Congratulations to all of the debaters listed below, your participation was greatly appreciated. As the winners of the preliminary rounds, Team B and Team C will be competing in the championship debate scheduled for March 6, 2014. The topic that they'll be debating will be "Government security agencies are justified in monitoring private communication for the sake of national security."
